Sunrise Cooperative Completes Clyde Rail Expansion

Jul 10, 2025

July 10, 2025, CLYDE, OHIO - On June 9, 2025, the employees at the Sunrise Cooperative Clyde Grain facility loaded their first train on the new rail expansion. This marked the conclusion of a multi-year project to expand the existing track which held a 90-car unit train to a 105-car unit train. The new expansion allows trains to come into the grain facility, drop the railcars and load them without blocking the main roadway for an extended period of time in Clyde.

Design plans for the rail expansion began in 2023, the physical work started in January of 2024 with moving dirt and readying the track site. By December 2024, the work to lay the track began and was completed in the spring of 2025.

Along with expanding the rail, Sunrise Cooperative employees participated in an accreditation process to become certified operators of the Norfolk Southern engines, a first in the company’s history. “What does that do for us? Instead of loading nine cars at a time, we can now load thirty cars, since we have that much power and rail,” George D. Secor, President/CEO of Sunrise Cooperative, claims proudly in recent video address to the customer-owners of Sunrise. “Now when the 105-car trains come into our Clyde facility, the locomotives stay on them and Sunrise employees man the locomotive.”

While the new expansion keeps the main roadway in Clyde clear, when a train is being loaded it will block a portion of Burkholder Road. Sunrise has processes in place to notify all local authorities when a train arrives and encourages all customer-owners to access the branch via State Route 20 and Burkholder Road as access to the branch will be closed via State Route 101, including the truck lane across from the branch. “When a train comes in, out goes a text blast that says we’re loading a train today, please use the alternate route – which will only be 3% or 4% of the year.” George stated. “This expansion was a major, major project for us and we’re excited to see it going so well.”
