Fueling the Cure Together

Oct 29, 2021

Your propane purchase goes beyond heating your home, business or drying your grain. It helps to support cancer research.

In 2009, Sunrise Cooperative, along with Centerra Co-Op, Heritage Cooperative and Premier Energy joined forces to build the Fueling the Cure initiative. At the onset, the cooperatives established that $1.00 per propane delivery would be donated to the initiative. A year ago, Sunrise, behind the support of President/CEO George D. Secor, increased its donation to $2.00 per delivery.

100% of the funds raised through the Fueling the Cure initiative goes to the “Cooperative for the Cure of Cancer,” an endowment fund established in 2011 by the cooperatives at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. This fund helps to support the initial research between food, diet, nutrition and cancer. It assists training the next generation of scientists to continue to research how food aides in cancer prevention and treatment. This research connects directly to the world renown James Cancer Hospital at The Ohio State University and establishes national recognition and support for more extensive research.

On October 29th, Dr. Steven Clinton, MD, PhD, at The Ohio State University James Cancer Center and Dr. Yael Vodovotz, Professor, Food Science and Technology were presented with a check for $212,917.45, which signifies the four cooperatives Fueling the Cure donation. With its $2.00 donation per deliver, Sunrise contributed $75,196, which spans the course of its fiscal year.

Throughout the past 12 years, the cooperatives have merged and changed, but the goal to support a cure for cancer has stayed the same. In 2017, Fueling the Cure was proud to announce $1 million dollars had been raised between the cooperatives.

Together these organizations have raised over $1.7 million in 12 years and will continue to do so.

“Cancer has touched numerous people in more ways than one,” said Jason Kamann, Sunrise Cooperative Vice President of Energy. “The Fueling the Cure initiative is a way to join forces in the fight against cancer. Providing support for cancer research is invaluable. Every propane delivery connects our customers, cancer survivors and cancer patients, which truly showcases that no one fights alone.”
